You are walking down Mohamed Sultan Road, either in search of the best cakes in Singapore, or for some clubs to hit, and you see that huge changes have occurred recently.

martini firm on mohamed sultan road by mychael deanMany of them have been torn down, replaced with new ones.

You will notice, as you go down the road, passing by Eastside Bar and Siam Supperclub, Vino Vino and En Japanese Dining Bar, an interesting bar in striking white across the road.

You pause in your tracks, and look at the club. Hesitating, considering if you should head further down to dbl0, but something in your mind tells you to cross the road, and you do.

Daybed Bar is, in a word, refreshing. Clad in white in and out, top to bottom, it is one of the most striking buildings along Mohamed Sultan Road. Outside the bar are glass-top tables and comfy dining chairs, soon to be replaced by outdoorsy daybeds.

On entering the alfresco area, you are again greeted by daybeds which are occupied by people luxuriating and chatting, relaxing to groovy tunes of acid jazz and soul music.

Indeed, quite the remake from its former owners, Coyote Ugly, (named not because they wore ugly coyote costumes, but after the movie) with waitresses dancing on the table and spraying people with stuff from the barguns.

Mychael Dean, the owner of Daybed Bar, spent quite an effort scraping the sleaze off the walls. "Once we started taking the place down, its just seemed like there was more and more to tear apart!" So after some consideration, he slapped a new coat of paint on it, all white, custom-tailored all the furniture, and made it a white bar. Literally.

The clientele is certainly not only expatriate. Businessmen, rich young people, socialites, local celebs (but please, kids, no going into the bars and hoping to get an autograph.

Daybed Bar is a respite, so let them have theirs. Just smile and say hi.) , and people from every walk of life come to Daybed Bar to take a load off their shoulders, and just relax to its comforting environment and comfy daybeds, and excellent music, which is very different from the gangsta rap thumpa thumpa that you hear coming out from clubs further down the road.

Which is exactly what the owners wanted to create. "Life can be a bitch. We all know that. So we've tried to create a wonderful environment for people to forget their worries for a few hours, to let their hair down. We're not a dance club. We play groovy tunes, for people to relax."

It's only a pity that the bar is so intimate. However, plans for expansion into the floors above are already in motion.

Eventually, the place will become a restaurant in the levels above, with private rooms for functions, and tables are available through reservations only. So have a cocktail before dinner at the bar, then dinner and chill out after dinner. Perfect.

What are must tries at Daybed Bar are the blue cheese mushrooms (fantastic!), the Grey Goose martinis, and the Moosehead beers, made in Canada, that are great even for someone who doesn't really like beers. Even better, most of the alcohol is one-for-one from 5pm to 9pm everyday, even some of the martinis!

Daybed Bar is open everyday, from 3pm to 3am. Mychael hopes it will take off well enough to open all day, everyday. And hopefully, there will be a position open there then, or I'll end up bursting my pockets because I'll be there all the time anyway. Trust me, this is one white bar you don't want to miss.
