Aqua Vitea, which is Latin for "water of life", is an ancient term widely interpreted and used throughout the Europe for a concentrated aqueous solution of ethanol.

Blair Athol 1989

A local version of this name was often given to a country's native distilled spirit - Russian zhizennia voda, French eau de vie, and Scandinavian akevitt to cite just a few well-known examples.

In Scotland, the Gaelic translation was uisge beatha ( pronounced "ooshkie-bayha" ) which became known as whiskie in the early 1700's and first appeared in the modern form we all know and love (whisky) around 1736. One such aqua vitea of exceptional note is Blair Athol 1989 from the Blair Athol Distillery.

Blair Athol emerged in 1998 with a caveat that only a single cask of bottlings would be made available in limited numbers, 50 to be exact to commemorate the company's 50th anniversary.

Blair Athol Distillery stands at the gateway to the Scottish Highlands in the picturesque town of Pitlochry. It produces several mellow, fruity, smooth single malts, but the bulk of production finds its way into Bell's blended Scotch whisky. Refill hogshead cask number 4279 was filled with new spirit in 1989 and 15 years later in 2008 only 336 bottles were charged.

The whisky smells of tinned tangerines and breakfast cereal with the citrus of ripened apples. The taste is hugely malty and distinctly sweet with apples and just a hint of smoke, but it's the texture and oils that win the day - they're perfect. The whisky teeters on the brink of over-sweet and over-indulgent, but never falls off that cliff as it finishes long, spicy and fresh, finally disappearing in a puff of sweet smoke.
