Indochine takes chillin' to a whole new level... with Forbidden Ice Palace...

ice bar at forbidden city

I
hate the weather in Singapore. If it's not too hot, it's too wet. And I'm guessing a lot of people think like me too, cos the other day, I saw a top three list of things that God made that was good on some wall, done by some stupid prankster I guess.

And they were, in ascending order of importance, sex, ice-cream, and air-conditioning. While it amazes me that sex was ranked third, it's hardly surprising. Living in Singapore would be perfect, if not for the weather.

Fortunately, the people at Indochine and vodka label 42 Below have helped solve this problem. And for that, I vow to always be a loyal patron at Ice Palace. What's that again? It's the Ice Palace, better known as Ice Bar.

Aptly named, it gives Singaporeans the chance to feel like an NTUC Fairprice worker, cos the temperature is about as cold as in those storage rooms.

And for once, I'm not being sarcastic, but there are real perks to working at NTUC that I never thought about, one of which is that as long as you stay at work, you're free of the torturous weather of this island.

Ice Bar is part of the setup at Forbidden City, Indochine's bar cum restaurant in Clarke Quay, and probably the only bar in Singapore to boast a temperature of -15 degrees.

Guests are provided with fur-lined jackets, and only allowed to stay in the bar for limited times, in case someone freezes to death.

At such temperatures, it's impossible to serve beer or most other drinks. So to serve your desperate need for a drink, they have bartenders whose sole duty is to mix unique cocktails for your parched throat.

Sounds like a dream job. I'm not sure now if I'd prefer to work there, or just stay there for the rest of my life as a patron.
